Domestic Violence against Women in Europe

Violence against women is present at all socio-economic levels, age, groups, races, religions and countries. Despite the increased attention to the issue and many positive developments in policy and practices it is still widespread in all European countries.

E-MARIA is a project funded by the European Commission, DG Criminal Justice, to develop
innovative approaches to and instruments for risk assessment in the field of domestic
violence in order to increase the prediction of re-assault and to promote the safety and
security of victims of violence. Together with the AMCV – Portugal, BUPNET-Germany and the Social Innovation Fund (Lithuania), die Berater is a partner in the E-Maria project.

On April 4th a Workshop on Risk Assessment was organized by the AMCV in Lisbon hosting two experts in working with violent crime, Laura Richards and Davina James-Hanman.

Laura Richards left New Scotland Yard in 2007 to take up the role of advising ACPO after a decade of working on violent crime. She developed the Domestic Abuse, Stalking and Harassment and Honour based Violence Risk Checklist (DASH 2009) on behalf of ACPO and in partnership with coordinated Action Against Domestic Abuse (CAADA).

Davina James–Hanman is the Director of AVA (Against Violence and Abuse, www.avaproject.org.uk/) and has worked in the field of violence against women for over two decades in a variety of capacities encompassing volunteer, front-line work, policy and strategy roles.

A new face for “Resource Pack for Networkers”:

Publication on how to build European networks translated and re-edited

Networking is a key competence of practitioners in education, and networks are considered to have high potential for solving structural problems.

The “Resource Pack for Networkers”, published die Berater®, deals with planning and implementing educational networks. It addresses professionals in education – teachers, trainers, programme developers, managers, researchers and evaluators – who are already involved in networks or may wish to be so in the future.

Now the “Resource Pack” has been translated by Euro-Med Youth Platform into Arabic to make it available for Mediterranean cooperation initiatives.

In a second edition it was re-designed to make it more colourful and appealing to young people active in the Youth in Action programme.

Youth in Action promotes mobility within and beyond the EU borders, non-formal learning and intercultural dialogue, and encourages the inclusion of all young people, regardless of their educational, social and cultural background.

The Euro-Med Youth Platform aims to bring NGOs from the European and Mediterranean regions together in an environment of tolerance and mutual understanding by assisting them in networking and capacity building, increasing their participation and exchanging good practice.

Although die Berater® is an adult education provider, our extensive experience in networking and international cooperation will surely make a valuable contribution to these neighbouring action fields.
