Internal training seminar – using the “Health Box” in a training context
Healthy Lifestyle through education – following this motto an internal training seminar was organized at die Berater® in Wels. The aim of this training workshop was to present and to introduce the training material which has been developed in the EU-project “Health Box- Integration of Health Issues in Adult Education”. The material was created to reach socio-economical disadvantaged persons with health issues, to raise awareness, to provide information and to show them how their lifestyle is connected with their health.
The core element of the workshop were hands on activities – to try out a selection of the developed exercises, discussing them with the trainers, asking them about their experiences with health topics in their courses.
Explain the term “breakfast” without using the following “taboo-words”: eat, morning, coffee, get up, meal - Last Wednesday eight trainers of die Berater® Wels spent one afternoon getting to know a playful way to integrate health topics in adult educational settings. With this playful version of the popular game “Taboo”, they discussed positive and negative aspects on alcohol consumption and they tested their knowledge on drugs and their long term consequences on health.
8 trainers of die Berater® Wels participated in the Workshop, 6 of them are working with youth. What they report sounds startling: A high percentage of their course participants suffer from bad nutrition, overweight and show bad physical condition, which influences their general health condition and thus their employability. Therefore the topic “health” is an integral part of their training activities. The Health Box training encouraged them to continue their work on health issues, using new tools. All trainers are fully aware of the fact, that this is only a small piece of contribution they can provide. Especially the involvement of parents would be an important aspect to support young people in changing their habits. Maybe the idea for another project?

Healthbox – successful work in adult education
Almost one year after the EU-Grundtvig project “Healthbox- Integration of Health Issues in Adult Education” came to a successful end, the potential remains for the broader, continued usage of the material. Trainers from across various countries expressed their interest in using the Healthbox material in their work with people from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Promoting healthy lifestyles through education
In September, Doncaster College (UK) started to use the Healthbox with 3500 learners, and following positive feedback on the project outcomes, die Berater® went on to share information about the educational input of the Healthbox through internal workshops for their trainers. In these workshops groups discussed the usage of the Healthbox in different training settings, providing additional practical dissemination channels. The training materials can be downloaded here: www.bridgestoeurope.com

Domestic Violence against Women in Europe
Violence against women is present at all socio-economic levels, age, groups, races, religions and countries. Despite the increased attention to the issue and many positive developments in policy and practices it is still widespread in all European countries.
E-MARIA is a project funded by the European Commission, DG Criminal Justice, to develop
innovative approaches to and instruments for risk assessment in the field of domestic
violence in order to increase the prediction of re-assault and to promote the safety and
security of victims of violence. Together with the AMCV – Portugal, BUPNET-Germany and the Social Innovation Fund (Lithuania), die Berater is a partner in the E-Maria project.
On April 4th a Workshop on Risk Assessment was organized by the AMCV in Lisbon hosting two experts in working with violent crime, Laura Richards and Davina James-Hanman.
Laura Richards left New Scotland Yard in 2007 to take up the role of advising ACPO after a decade of working on violent crime. She developed the Domestic Abuse, Stalking and Harassment and Honour based Violence Risk Checklist (DASH 2009) on behalf of ACPO and in partnership with coordinated Action Against Domestic Abuse (CAADA).
Davina James–Hanman is the Director of AVA (Against Violence and Abuse, www.avaproject.org.uk/) and has worked in the field of violence against women for over two decades in a variety of capacities encompassing volunteer, front-line work, policy and strategy roles.

Achieving a Healthy Education? Project Health Box shows you how!
Those who are most in need of health education - adults who are socio-economically disadvantaged, with a low level of education and those with a migration background - are the least likely to be reached by conventional offers:
So how can these adults be reached? Health issues have to be integrated into adult education in order to help them acquire a healthier lifestyle and stave off potential illnesses. Simply expecting adults to seek out health education seminars will not have the desired impact or success.
Project Health Box addresses this challenge. The project developed a Health Box, which contains ready-to-use training materials for health promotion. This Health Box can be easily integrated by adult educators in classes on subjects other than health in order to reach the target group. All Health Box materials aim to promote the knowledge, attitudes and skills required to prevent lifestyle-related illnesses and thus to promote and enhance healthy lifestyles.
At the closing conference on 24th November in Vienna, experiences and results will be presented and discussed with experts and practitioners in adult education and the health system. They will be discussed in the wider perspective of the relationship between educational background, social status and health, and in the light of Best Practice examples from other European countries.

Creating dialogues: be part of our new EU Blog
Working in the field of EU projects presents many challenges as well as opportunities for learning. People, geographically dispersed all over Europe, working together for the first time, will encounter different interests, motivations and organisational cultures. To assure an innovative and qualitative outcome, the people working on projects need to be transformed into a committed and high-performing team.
With the EU Blog we want to share information on all topics concerning multicultural and multilateral projects. The EU-Blog from die Berater® should also be seen as a platform that provides all people interested in European projects with information on important events, findings on project management and outcomes of certain projects.
The EU Department at die Berater® is itself working on many European projects concerning education and training. In our daily work with multicultural and multilateral teams, we encounter many challenges and opportunities, which we want to share on the EU-Blog. We try as much as possible to write about the issues that we have been facing throughout our experience with EU projects.
We hope you enjoy reading our posts! Please feel free to comment on the posts. We also openly welcome any questions!
